Flow chart for enrolments to Peoples-uni (P-u) and Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU)*
These arrangements come into effect from 2011. The modules increased in length and the assignments were changed, in Semester 10b, and modules taken during that semester and later can be considered under the new arrangements. Until then, P-u awards and enrolment only are available, and under these previous arrangements, 8 modules are required for the Diploma. Enrolment with MMU will be available from Semester 11b (September 2011).
Current students - please see Transition arrangements below. Please see here for details of link with Manchester Metropolitan University. Please note, although not included in this flow chart, it is also possible to enrol in any of the units for Continuing Professional Development without the need to gain academic credit. Also, previous terminology of 'modules' now changed to 'units'.

Selection of modules. Among the 6 modules you have to take to gain the Diploma (from P-u or MMU), you have to take at least 2 from the “Foundation Sciences of Public Health' group and at least 2 from the 'Public Health Problems' group. You can select whichever modules will be most useful for you, and take these in any order, to a maximum of 2 modules per semester. If you have no previous experience of epidemiology, you may find it useful to take the Introduction to Epidemiology module early in the course.
*Note: In order to obtain an academic award from MMU, you will have to enrol in the MMU MPH programme. There are extra costs for this – please see Course fees. The teaching and the modules are the same, but you will obtain an academic award from MMU if you are successful.
**Note: The Dissertation requires a critical literature review – you might find it useful to have enrolled in the Evidence Based Practice module if you are considering going as far as the Dissertation.
***Note: You can obtain a Certificate in Patient Safety from Peoples-uni, if you complete and pass the Evidence Based Practice, Patient Safety and Patient Safety in Practice modules. Please see http://www.peoples-uni.org/node/281 for more details.
Transition arrangements for current students.
To enrol with MMU, you are strongly advised to have passed at least two modules/units with P-u at the Masters level, that is in modules/units taken in semesters 2010b, 2011a, or later. The purpose is to ensure that you are at an appropriately high enough academic level, and likely to be successful. You may be able to 'count' up to 3 of the modules you have passed with P-u towards the 6 modules required by MMU for the Diploma, or up to 4 of the modules you have passed towards the MMU MPH award, but will have to enrol for a further remaining number of modules. Approval of prior learning may be given for up to 50% of the credits for the MMU award - the MPH comprises 180 credits (with the MMU Diploma comprising 120 credits) while each of the modules/units provide 20 credits. If you are in the situation of wanting to count your previous modules for this purpose, please contact the P-u coordinator Dick Heller to discuss.
