Take this quiz on referencing and plagiarism

In his assignment a student wrote: In a recent study (Kashmarov et al. 2008) it was found that these interventions were not always cost effective.

Use the information above to answer questions 1-2:

1. The student is using Harvard style of referencing

True: Vancouver style places numbers in the text citation and other information in the references list citation, while Harvard style, the other popular style, uses author/year in the text citation. Some other minor differences also exist between the two styles on the information put on the references list citation.

2. There are probably more than 3 authors of the source of citing.

True – if there are three or less authors, they should all be cited in the text and in the references list, but if there are more than three you can write the first one, followed by et al. (and others), but in the reference list citation all the authors should appear.

3. In contrast to quoting, paraphrasing does not need acknowledging the source.

False - Both paraphrasing and quoting need acknowledging the source. Paraphrasing is when you use the ideas and express them on your own words, while quoting is taking a whole piece (i.e. a phrase, a paragraph) from the source and putting them between quotation marks.

4. Citing many sources from literature weakens students' assignment.

False – this on the contrary strengthens the assignment. That is a proof that the student made a good effort and that he can synthesize available information. That is evidence to arguments which were raised in the assignment, especially if they come from a reputable source and/or a well designed study. Problems come only when a huge part is taken each time.

5. Quoting is the always a good way of citing, it ensures that the exact words of the source are used.

False – quoting is preferable only in certain circumstances when you need to relate specific and exact words to the source such as in definitions, controversial arguments, important political statements… otherwise it is always preferred that students use their own words in citing others' ideas(paraphrasing).

6. Taking without referencing from someone else's work is called:

1.Plagiarism 2.Quotation 3.Citation 4.Misrepresentation

Answer - 1. and 4. are the correct answers
